Here's a little bit about our talented new artist collaborator, who hand-drew several of the gorgeous new patterns for our spring collection, Taehyub Lee.
Q: Tell us a bit about yourself. What’s your story?
A: Hello! I am Taehyub Lee, Textile designer, Portrait painter and Mommy to Hannah. I live in NYC, but originally I am from Korea. I went to Art student league of New York for painting classes.
Q: Have you always known you wanted to be an artist, or did you stumble upon your passion?
A: I have been a portrait painter for 7 years since I arrived in New York. I started Textile design 3 years ago after the birth of my baby girl. I am always painting or drawing, and could never imagine myself not doing it!
Q: Who is your favourite artist, Canadian or otherwise?
A: My favorite artist is British painter, Jennifer Anderson. She is my goal for balancing between Figurative painting and Textile design.
Q: Where is your favourite place to work? A: Mostly at my dining table. :-) Easy to get there and my drawing supplies are always right there on my table. Plus there’s a window beside it with a beautiful view.
Q: What is the most valuable piece of advice you’ve ever been given, professionally or personally?
A: Slow down and focus. My mentor, Sharon Sprung gave me this advice when I took her class. Whenever I have too much work, or problems with my work, this advice makes me calm and stronger.
Q: If you had to pick one, which would be your favourite piece of Art that you have ever created, and why?
A: " Dancing, Dancing" This is a print I made for my daughter's dress. I was so energized when I created this print.
Q: What is your all-time favourite piece of Art by another artist? (Please send a photo)
A: This piece by John Evan. His color and composition is so calm and relaxing.
Q: How did you hear about Printed Matter?
A: Instagram :-) Sometimes, Social media creates good opportunities!
