Though for many this time of year is filled with excitement and happy social gatherings, as the years go on and we take on more responsibility (and more engagements) it is easy to lose the Christmas spirit and just feel overall drained and Scroogey! Juggling end of year loose ends to tie up at work, Christmas shopping, kids off school for winter break, and holiday parties galore, things can start to feel overwhelming. Here are a few tricks to help keep those stress levels at a minimum, and keep things in perspective this holiday season. Remember- life is good!
This rule doesn’t just apply to shopping! Staying organized is the key to managing stress. Lists are hugely helpful in this. In your busiest few weeks, take the time to sit down each night before bed and make a handwritten list of all the things you need to accomplish the next day. There is something therapeutic about putting pen to paper and organizing your thoughts. You can even categorize it between work, personal and errands/to-do’s. Having this at hand will keep you from forgetting things and getting derailed by any potential distractions that come your way. If you don’t get something done, at least you will have it written down to be added to the next day’s list.
Take a few moments for yourself each day.
Sometimes it feels like the world just won’t go round if you don’t get absolutely everything done at that exact moment. It is important to carve out a small chunk of your day EACH day to sit back and escape. Whether it’s curling up with a great novel for a half hour, writing letters on your best stationery, or cruising your favourite online shop, make sure you take this personal time and let your mind wind down for a few minutes. You will be more productive when you head back to your task list, and will find yourself feeling much less stressed as well!
Make time for a weekly workout.
Whether you enjoy a nice relaxing yoga class or an intense round of kickboxing, try to find the time to fit this in as you normally would, or at least once or twice a week. Exercise is a great stress buster and shouldn’t be pushed down the priority scale! Plus, the endorphins are a great mood elevator. Buh-bye, Scrooge!
Don’t forget to hydrate!
With all the busy hustle bustle it’s easy to forget to keep drinking. Dehydration can cause fatigue, swelling, and decrease brain functionality. Want to stay on your game? Get those 8 glasses in every day! If you’re heading out to do errands, make sure you pack a refillable water bottle in your bag. Stressed at the office? Keep a full glass of water right on your desk at all times so you can’t forget to drink it. This is especially important during the holiday party circuit. Apply the rinse cycle! Follow each boozey, sugary cocktail with a glass of good old h2o. Your reduced hangover will thank you in the morning.
