Gifting can be expensive and difficult when searching for the perfect store-bought item, so why not try creating a few gifts yourself? As you know, we’re all about customization, with hand-drawn designs and personalized paper goods. Similarly, your gift will have a personal touch and special meaning if hand-made with that particular person in mind. It’s guaranteed to have a major impact! Additionally, this is a great way to spend some quality time with your kids, teach them how to get creative, and most importantly get them into the Christmas spirit. Here are four fun craft ideas to try with your kids this Holiday season!
Pine Cone Angels
A classic Christmas decoration, the pinecone angel is a lovely adornment on any table or even hung as an ornament on a Christmas tree. Best of all, they are super inexpensive and easy to make! First, find a pinecone and an acorn and spray paint them in your choice of silver or gold. Next, find a long piece of white (or sparkly) pipe-cleaner (at any dollar store) and a golf tee and spray these as well to match. First, with a strong glue attach your acorn to the top of the pinecone. (This will be the head.) Next, glue the pointy side of the golf tee just above mid-way down the front of the acorn for the trumpet. Bend a small piece of your pipe cleaner into a circle and attach one side to the top back of the acorn to make a halo. Use the rest to make arms, attaching and bending the pipe-cleaner accordingly so that they appear to be holding the trumpet in place. Last but not least, attach your wings to the back of the pinecone. You can get creative here, using a variety of materials such as more pipe-cleaner, leaves, or wired ribbon. If you choose to turn your angel into an ornament for hanging, don’t forget to attach your wire for this as well, using a standard ornament hook which can easily be attached to the wings.
Festive Bottle Stopper
Another simple and inexpensive idea, find a few holiday themed decorations or ornaments (ex. mini-santas, angels, peace doves, holly ornaments, etc.) You can find these at any dollar store, or your favourite local gift shops. Next, take an unused cork (or one per decoration) and create a 1/8 inch wide hole, drilling half way down the center of the cork. If your decoration does not have any kind of spoke on the bottom, use superglue to attach the flat end of a screw to the bottom of the decoration. Allow one hour to dry. Screw the decoration into the cork until tightly secure, and voila! You have a fabulous festive bottle stopper that will make a perfect gift for your holiday party hostess or wine loving friend.
Holiday Cookie Jar
Baking cookies is a holiday tradition, but what if we took it a step further and decorated the cookie jar for an extra personal touch? Simply find a clear glass jar or large mason jar at any storage solutions or kitchen store, and hand paint your favourite holiday designs onto it with a small paint brush and acrylic paint! (Think snowflakes, snowmen, Christmas trees, etc.) Feel free to play around with glitter and sparkly paint, the more bling the better! You can also play around with white spray paint to create a frosty look. The kids can even sign their names if they want to. To finish, tie a festive ribbon around the top. Don’t forget to fill it with fresh delicious cookies when you’re done!
A lovely customized gift, photo coasters are surprisingly easy to make. Just buy a few coaster sized square tiles, preferably in a lighter shade like white so the photos pop. Take a few polaroids that are special to your gift receiver (you and the family, a happy memory of yourself and a friend, etc.) and cut off the white borders. Apply mod podge to the back and tick the polaroids carefully onto the tiles, then let dry for 30 mins. Next, apply the mod podge all over the front of the picture and onto the bordering tile. Let dry for one hour and repeat twice. To finish, apply a clear sealant and leave your tiles to dry overnight. Finally, apply a small felt pad to each corner on the underside of the tiles. These photo coasters will no doubt be an eye catching memento on the coffee table of any family member or friend!
